Statement

My work inhabits the intersection between the political and the personal: the liminal space where impersonal political structures become intimate, where collective memory and personal memory collide, and where fact and fiction can comfortably exist next to each other. As a filmmaker, I use the safety of the fictional distance in cinema to specifically explore female sexual vulnerabilities and exploit voyeuristic desires within the viewer. I take advantage of film’s ability to radically manipulate the viewer’s spatial and temporal experience in order to create non-linear narratives that explore the relationship between cultural and personal memory, psychological trauma, and obsessive reenactment of loss. At this present moment, I am fascinated by young women who are willing to redefine themselves in relation to a predominantly male military collective, literally and figuratively sacrificing their bodies to a faceless national identity. While recognizing that there is a certain comfort in anonymity, I can’t help but question how these women personally engage with the military institution. Do they become intimate with this seemingly sterile monolithic political body?
